This is a crane mounted on a pontoon. It extends the operating range of the crane to the water, enabling it to carry out lifting operations in areas that are difficult or impossible for land cranes to reach. Floating cranes are usually mounted on self-propelled pontoons. The cranes provide fast, independent operations in ports, on rivers or at open sea for transshipment operations.

These cranes are used for loading, discharging, transshipment, and lightening for ports with insufficient depth. Often multiple floating cranes operate simultaneously on one vessel so very high unloading rates can be achieved. It usually works with grab or containers.
